چکیده

Abstract. Estuaries and rivers are important biogeochemical reactors that act to modify the loads composition of nutrients in coastal zone. In a case study during July 2013, we sampled an 80 km transect along Elbe Estuary under low-oxygen conditions. To better elucidate specific mechanisms estuarine nitrogen processing, tracked evolution stable isotopic nitrate, nitrite, particulate matter, ammonium through water column. This approach allowed assessment situ isotope effects nitrite oxidation remineralization at reach scale. The were consistent with pure-culture assessments. We found budget is governed by settling, resuspension, further used our data evaluate sources sinks via mass-balance approach. find reactivity its estuary, main control on dynamics inorganic species. Moreover, while underscoring this role matter delivery reactivity, mass balance also indicated additional reactive nitrogen, such as possible denitrification column nitrate intensively dredged deep Hamburg Harbor region.

Circulation and Suspended Particulate Matter Transport in a Tidally Dominated Estuary: Caravelas Estuary, Bahia, Brazil

The circulation and transport of suspended particulate matter in the Caravelas Estuary are assessed. Nearlysynoptic hourly hydrographic, current (ADCP velocity and volume transport) and suspended particulate matter data were collected during a full semidiurnal spring tide, on the two transects Boca do Tomba and Barra Velha and on longitudinal sections at low and high tide. On the first transect...

Characteristics of stable nitrogen isotopes in particulate organic matter and periphyton of a subtropical Chinese watercourse, the Dashahe River

Key-words: particulate organic matter, periphyton, nitrogen stable isotope, subtropical river The stable nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) of particulate organic matter (POM) and periphyton were measured at sites along the Dashahe River, a short subtropical watercourse in SE China. δ15N values of both POM and periphyton tended to increase from upstream to downstream, ranging from 1.1‰ to 7.4‰ for ...

Molecular evidence for sediment nitrogen fixation in a temperate New England estuary

Primary production in coastal waters is generally nitrogen (N) limited with denitrification outpacing nitrogen fixation (N2-fixation). However, recent work suggests that we have potentially underestimated the importance of heterotrophic sediment N2-fixation in marine ecosystems. We used clone libraries to examine transcript diversity of nifH (a gene associated with N2-fixation) in sediments at ...

Carbon and nitrogen cycling on intertidal mudflats of a temperate Australian estuary. I. Benthic metabolism

The light and dark inundated fluxes of O2 and total CO2 (TCO2), as well as the concentrations of chlorophyll a and phaeopigments, were measured (ex situ) on the upper and lower portions of 2 intertidal mudflats—1 in the upper Huon Estuary (salinity 4 to 32) and 1 in a marine side-arm of the estuary (salinity 17 to 34)—over 4 seasons. Dark-exposed fluxes of O2 and CO2 were also measured on the u...
